We are working on purification systems for remediation of VOC and heavy metals in the ground and ground-water, dioxin reduction for garbage incinerators, catalysts to promote total incineration, and others. In recent years, we have also developed crow-repellent garbage bag additives and raw material for lead-free vinyl chloride stabilizers that are both safe for humans and environmentally friendly. Furthermore, we are working on hydrogen production systems using ligneous biomass.

Hydrotalcite is a kind of naturally yielded clay mineral. The typical chemical composition is a carbonic acid type, and the composition is Mg₆Al₂(OH)₁₆CO₃·4(H₂O). TODA KOGYO artificially synthesizes hydrotalcite.

Soil and Groundwater Remediation Agent “RICS” is iron composite nanoparticle which is applied TODA KOGYO’s wet synthesis technologies. It can rapidly purify VOC, Volatile Organic Compounds, and insolubilize heavy metals.

Sodium Ferrite for CO₂ Solid Sorbent TODA KOGYO has developed sodium ferrite, NaFeO₂, using our synthesis technology. The NaFeO₂ can capture CO₂in combustion exhaust gas and release it when heated to about 100℃.

Hydrotalcite is a kind of naturally yielded clay mineral. The typical chemical composition is a carbonic acid type, and the composition is Mg₆Al₂(OH)₁₆CO₃·4(H₂O). TODA KOGYO artificially synthesizes hydrotalcite.

Hydrotalcite is generally represented layered double hydroxides (LDH) of Mg/Al and carbonate type. Anions such as chloride ion (Cl⁻) are adsorbed by ion exchange with carbonate ion (CO₃²⁻) between Mg/Al type layers. In addition, the contained carbonate ion (CO₃²⁻) absorbs infrared rays and exert a heat storage and heat retention effect. Hydrotalcite also have other functions such as water adsorption or an acid adsorbent for rubber containing halogen.

TODA KOGYO’s hydrotalcite (Mg/Al layered compound) have excellent infrared absorption property and transparency. They can enhance heat retention when mixed into a polyolefin film for agricultural greenhouses. Consequently, hydrotalcite contribute to the protection of the global environment by reducing the energy.

Soil and Groundwater Remediation Agent

We work on developing soil and groundwater remediation agent to solve these problems. Our sample under development is a high activity material in which iron nanoparticle (α-Fe) is highly dispersed in a carbon matrix. Therefore, it is an innovative Iron nanoparticle-carbon composite that can be applied to in-situ remediation of polluted soil and groundwater.

Soil and groundwater polluted with hazardous substances such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals affect human health, growth of agricultural crops and plants and ecosystems. Moreover, residual hazardous substances cause a long-term pollution in the original area and can result in further pollution over large areas by leaching into groundwater. Therefore, we must take measures to prevention of pollution diffusion and degradation and removal of pollutants.

Iron nanoparticle (10-100nm) containing α-Fe highly dispersed in a carbon matrix

Trichlorethylene (TCE) decomposition

  • Our development sample is a strong reducing agent. Therefore, chlorine atoms are replaced with hydrogen atoms, i.e., the VOCs decomposition.
  • The TCE decomposition rate is 100 times faster than the existing iron powder.
  • It achieves higher TCE decomposition than our product RNIP™ (α-Fe+Fe₃O₄).
The mock-polluted water samples (it is about 5,000 times TCE concentrations than the soil elution standard prescribed to the Soil Contamination Countermeasures Act) were analyzed using gas chromatography and evaluated the change of TCE concentration with reaction time by addition of the remediation agent.

Sodium Ferrite for CO₂ Solid Sorbent

TODA KOGYO has developed sodium ferrite, NaFeO₂, using our synthesis technology. The NaFeO₂ can capture CO₂in combustion exhaust gas and release it when heated to about 100℃. It is a reusable solid material that contributes to carbon neutrality.
