Concept of Sustainability

The TODA KOGYO Group defines sustainability as “the lively growth and development of the company, society and the earth.”

To achieve sustainability as we see it, we help resolve social issues through our business activities.

The Group uses the term “lively growth and development” to reflect the the idea that we will “always continue lively growth and development” as described in our Management Principle. As well as achieving lively growth and development as a company, we believe it is equally important to ensure that our technologies and activities contribute to the sustainable development of humanity and the global environment.

To pursue this management principle, the TODA KOGYO Group emphasizes three values.

1 Contributing to future society through innovative fine particle synthesis technologies

In keeping with the spirit of a company built on technology, we imagine and create the future. We will face the issues of society with sincerity, and strive to be accountable, serve the public interest and practice safety management in keeping with the ethics of engineers. In addition, we will encourage ingenuity, engaging in competition and cooperation based on intellectual property.

2 Building a sustainable supply chain

In every aspect, from procurement activities to development, production and sales activities, we prioritize safety, the environment, human rights and quality. We work with partners who aspire to solve social issues in the same way, and strive to engage in fair trade, fulfill our supply responsibilities and contribute to society.

3 Being a better corporate citizen and a better social institution

We adhere to global rules and compliance requirements by taking the initiative in all our business activities from the top down. We endeavor to strengthen our corporate governance structure, engaging in appropriate financial management and disclosures while ensuring information security. We believe in the potential of people, and build an organizational culture that maximizes the myriad values produced from connections between people.

Core Competence

Three areas of competence that keep us ahead of the competition on a global scale

1 Competence in solid state chemistry

Solid state chemistry

A wide range of crystal shapes, configurations, properties

Solid state chemistry is the art to design specific physical properties into materials. Many of these materials are well known, as they exist in nature, e.g. iron oxide who colors our fields. Solid state material can be crystals, powders or preparations thereof. Toda Kogyo has specific know how to modify or amplify specific physical properties of these materials, like conductivity, magnetism, electrical capacity, absorption and desorption, refraction, reactivity and selectivity, surface kinetics. There is a wide variety of iron oxide particles in which iron and oxygen are linked in different ways, and depending on the chemical and crystal type, shape, size distribution, and surface of iron oxide particles, these have considerable differences in color, hardness, strength, and magnetic and chemical properties. Specific mixed metal oxide crystals have the ability to store energy and are therefore use in advanced Lithium ion batteries.

In order to create materials with the functions and properties that our customers request, we make full use of our knowledge and experience to determine the conditions of synthesis, consider ways in which higher-quality materials can be produced, and decide which compounds to add in order to create new functions.

2 Competence in material technology

Materials technology

Meeting complex and diversifying needs

Properties of materials depend on the molecular structure of primary submicron crystals as well on the agglomeration and interlinkage of the crystals. Therefore all processes in materials technology are strictly controlled and quality assured. Frequently high temperature solid state processes require clean room conditions to guarantee the low level of impurity contamination. If natural materials are too “dirty” to be used as precursor for the required physical properties, Toda Kogyo is creating these molecular precursors in a wet process. Toda’s wet synthesis technology is unique and allows controlling particles’ properties. By changing conditions of synthesis such as temperature, concentration, diffusion and pH, the crystalline structure, particle size, virginity and other aspects can be altered at the molecular level. Toda Kogyo´s technology is truly microscopic engineering to create macroscopic properties.

3 Competence in understanding customer needs

Understanding customers’ needs

Materials as a tool for providing the support our customers need to solve problems

TODA’s high level of expertise and unmatched knowledge, techniques, and know-how built around solid state chemistry allows to attack the problems faced by Toda’s customers with new concepts, and to provide solutions from an advanced materials point of view.

Customers are demanding materials with e.g. increased energy densities. Toda will closely follow these customer needs and identifies the issues that need to be addressed, proposing total solutions including molecular engineering, adjusting solid state technology parameter and processing methods that take advantage of the materials’ properties. All improvement work will be done in close cooperation with the applications developments departments of Toda´s customers, which allows upgrading the required property in customer´s application step by step.

Currently, Toda is meeting a diversifying range of customer needs by making advances in the development and manufacture of electronic components such as metal-compatible IC tags and antenna sheets for RFID use – advances that are made possible through our extensive knowledge of materials.

Environmental Vision

Commitments of Top Management

The world is facing serious problems arising from global warming, such as abnormal weather conditions, environmental pollution, resource  depletion, international conflicts, widening divides and discrimination. To resolve these issues, a number of initiatives aimed at creating a sustainable society are being pursued. They include corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, creating shared value (CSV) activities, efforts to meet the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investment.

The TODA KOGYO Group has long been working to reduce its environmental impact, regarding this task as an obligation we have as a chemical materials manufacturer. One example is a shift from dry synthesis methods that have a large environmental impact to wet synthesis methods that have a small impact. Another is to recycle waste fluid generated from steel sheet manufacturers into resources.
To further accelerate the reduction of our environmental impact and the safety management of chemical substances, we have revised our  Environmental Vision in line with a sustainability approach. We will operate based on this Environmental Vision with a view to realizing a sustainable society together with our stakeholders.
